Youngjun Lee
Biography
Based in Germany, Youngjun Lee continues to explore painting through a geological stratum-inspired layering technique. Layer by layer, he constructs images on his canvas, balancing structural rules with the spontaneity of each layer. These levels are filled with unconscious, rhythm-driven patterns, repetitive shapes, and abstract forms that arise freely. This interplay of intention and chance in each frame creates an intriguing tension. Lee employs a range of materials and techniques-oil and acrylic paint, pencil, silkscreen, airbrush, and more- as well as visual elements like dots, lines, surfaces, and colors to differentiate each layer. Occasionally, he pushes this further by erasing, cutting, or adding sections to blur the boundaries between strata. This continual process of fusing and dismantling shapes each work into a complex landscape of forms and vibrant hues, reminiscent of expose, eroded terrain viewed from above.
Youngjun Lee(b.1983) earned a B.A. in Fine Arts at Sungkyunkwan University in 2012, after which he acquired a Diplom for Fine Arts at AdBk München, Germany, in 2020. Starting with his show at Galerie Sebastianskapelle Ulm e.V, Germany, in 2023, Lee has had solo exhibitions at Space Cadalogs, Seoul, the same year, at Gallery Jiwooheon, Seoul, in 2024, and PIBI Gallery, Seoul, in 2025. He has also participated in various group exhibitions at IDFX, the Netherlands, Germany’s Kunstraum-Leitershofen and Galerie der Künstler, Prompt Project, Seoul, Everyart, Seoul, and more. He has been selected for Artist in Residence Munich from the Ministry of Culture of Munich, Germany (2023 - 2026), the Bavarian Award for the Advancement of the Arts, Germany (2023 – 2024), a special award from the German Arts Fund NEUSTART KULTUR, and the Free State of Bavaria scholarship program (2021).
독일과 한국을 기반으로 활동하는 이영준은 회화의 겹을 지층(地層)과 같이 구분하여 쌓는 '레이어(Layer)' 기법을 통해 회화의 영역에 대한 탐구를 이어오고 있다. 작가는 캔버스 위, 이미지를 쌓아 올리는 작업과정에 있어서 스스로가 정한 규율 안에서 한 겹 한 겹을 계획적으로 구성한다. 다만, 개별적 층 내에서는 무의식적인 반복 행위로 생성되는 패턴이나, 어떠한 형상도 의미하지 않는 리드미컬한 드로잉 선 등으로 즉흥성을 담아내며 의도와 우연이 공존하는 화면을 통해 묘한 긴장감을 더한다. 작품 안에서 각각의 '레이어'는 물질적 유화, 아크릴, 연필, 실크스크린, 에어브러쉬 등 혹은 시각적 점, 선, 면, 색, 패턴 등으로 차이를 두며 서로가 더욱 선명히 구분되도록 하는데, 작가는 여기서 더 나아가 이미지의 층 일부를 지우고, 오리고, 덧붙이며 각 층의 구분이 모호해지는 지점을 만들어낸다. 이처럼 결합과 파괴를 반복하며 생성된 화면은 마치 침식작용(浸蝕作用)으로 인해 깎여 드러난 지반(地盤)의 모습을 위에서 내려다보는 듯 다양한 형상과 색채의 조화로 이뤄진 복합적 풍경을 형성하고 있다.
이영준(b.1983)은 2012년 성균관대학교 미술학과를 졸업하고, 독일로 건너가 2020년 뮌헨 미술대학교(AdBk München)에서 순수미술 전공으로 디플롬(Diplom) 학위를 취득했다. 2023년 독일 Galerie Sebastianskapelle Ulm e.V.에서의 개인전을 시작으로, 같은 해 서울의 스페이스 카다로그, 2024년 지우헌, 2025년 피비갤러리에서 개인전을 선보였다. 또한, 네덜란드의 IDFX, 독일의 Kunstraum-Leitershofen 및 Galerie der Künstler, 서울의 프람프트 프로젝트와 에브리아트 등에서 단체전에 참여했다. 그는 독일 뮌헨시 문화부 작가지원(2023-2026), 독일 바이에른주 작가지원(2023-2024), 독일 예술기금재단 ‘NEUSTART KULTUR’ 특별지원(2021), 바이에른주 장학금 프로그램(2021) 등에 선정된 바 있다.
