From August 7th to September 13th, 2025, PIBI Gallery presents City and People, the solo exhibition of Suh Yongsun. For over four decades, Suh Yongsun has
forged a distinctive visual world through his painterly exploration of subjects
ranging from the Korean War and modern history to urban life, landscapes, and
self-portraiture. Among these, the theme of cities and the people who inhabit
them has remained a central and enduring focus. By tracing the transformation
of Seoul over time and capturing glimpses of cities such as Berlin, Beijing,
New York, and Melbourne, Suh has consistently turned his gaze toward urban
environments and the lives unfolding within them. What, then, has he sought to
convey through this body of work?
Suh’s
sustained interest in people and the spaces they inhabit has guided his
artistic journey across time and geography. In the 1980s and 1990s, he focused
on Seoul, then at the forefront of rapid urban development and transformation,
depicting the city and its residents with an almost documentary sensibility. As
his practice expanded to cities around the world, a visit to New York in 1992
marked a turning point. A melting pot of diverse cultures and communities, New
York and its inhabitants have since become a recurring subject in his work,
inspiring a number of ongoing series. However, the artist does not treat the
city as a mere backdrop for painting. His practice is rooted in a sustained
inquiry into the human condition and unfolds through direct, lived engagement
with cities shaped by distinct histories and cultures. Through the repetition
of daily rhythms, these environments become embodied and internalized,
eventually emerging as landscapes of perception. The people he encounters are
portrayed both as individual subjects and as symbolic figures representing the
collective. Notably, his method of observing people in unfamiliar streets and
developing an empathetic understanding of their lives closely parallels the
process of approaching historical subjects. In both cases, the work begins with
studying archival materials and visiting significant sites, followed by a deep
emotional immersion in the subject. Scenes drawn from everyday life—encounters
with urban dwellers on the New York subway, the streets of
Berlin, or aboard buses in Beijing—reflect the artist’s curiosity about others
and his attentiveness to those adrift in the vast currents of city life. These
moments, rendered with a strong sense of realism, appear on the canvas as vivid
depictions of people and place. Yet each image is filtered through the artist’s
subjective lens, ultimately taking shape as a visual interpretation layered
with symbolism and meaning.
Figures in Suh Yongsun’s paintings—such as the
hunched figure with a face hidden from view in <Ⓝ, 2024, 2025>, the
expressionless person gazing at a phone in Ⓝ5, 2023–2025>, or
the detached exchange between characters in —are rendered in coarse, economical lines that exemplify the
artist’s distinctive style. With wide, staring eyes, rigid noses,
prominent cheekbones, and faces often filled with deep red tones, these figures
transcend individual traits such as race, gender, or background. Instead, they
appear as symbolic forms. Their mask-like faces, evocative of traditional
Korean tal, take on even greater significance when seen alongside Suh’s
self-portraits. The impassive expressions facing forward, the emotions conveyed
through just a few bold lines, and the vivid use of color all shift attention
away from personal identity. What emerges is not a portrait of a particular
person, but a face as a landscape of life—an embodiment of lived history, a
mirror of the present, and a collective symbol of the human experience.
This exhibition at PIBI Gallery features
Suh Yongsun’s recent works created during his time in New York, including
scenes from the city’s subways and streets, as well as a series of
self-portraits. The figures in the artist’s work reflect his inquiry into
contemporary life, along with his experience and understanding of cities shaped
by those who inhabit them. City and People encapsulates Suh’s vision of
humanixty—at once a portrait of the individual, a reflection of our times, and
a record of history. The exhibition offers an opportunity to revisit the
artist’s enduring interest in people and to see it anew through a contemporary
lens.
피비갤러리는 8월 7일부터 9월 13일까지 서용선의 개인전 <도시와 사람들>을 개최한다. 지난 40여년간 한국 전쟁, 근현대사, 도시와 사람들, 풍경과 자화상 등 여러 갈래의 주제를 독창적인 화법으로 풀어내며 자신만의 회화세계를 구축해 오고 있는 서용선(b.1951)에게 ‘도시와 사람’은 오랜 시간 그리기의 대상이 되어왔다. 서울이라는 도시가 변화되는 시간과 과정 그리고 베를린, 베이징, 뉴욕, 멜버른 등 세계 여러 도시의 모습과 그 속에서 살아가는 사람을 관찰하고 그리기로 담으며 작가는 무엇을 표현하고자 했고, 또 무엇을 전달하고자 했을까?
사람에 대한 관심, 사람이 살아가는 공간에 대한 호기심은 여러 도시에 대한 관심으로 이동하며 오랜 세월 작가의 여정을 이끌었다. 1980년대부터 1990년대까지 주로 개발과 변화의 중심지였던 서울과 서울을 살아가는 도시 사람들을 기록하듯 그렸던 작가는 이후 여러 나라의 도시들을 거치며 작업을 이어오다가 1992년 처음 뉴욕을 방문한 것을 계기로 세계에서 가장 다양한 문화와 사람들이 용광로처럼 서로 섞이며 살아가는 뉴욕과 그 속에 살아가는 사람들에 대한 지속적인 관심으로 현재까지 여러 연작을 발표해 오고 있다. 도시를 단순히 회화의 배경이 되는 소재로 보지 않는 작가는 인간에 대한 탐구를 바탕으로 역사와 문화가 서로 다른 도시에서 자신이 직접 일상의 시간을 보내고 있다. 그리고 그 일상의 반복을 통해 몸으로 이해하고 인식함으로써 체화되는 도시는 하나의 인식의 풍경으로, 그 속에 살아가는 사람들은 개별이면서 전체를 대변하는 하나의 표상으로 자리한다. 흥미로운 점은 낯선 도시의 거리에서 사람들을 관찰하고 이러한 행위의 반복과 일상의 경험으로 도시와 그 속의 사람들의 상황과 감정을 이해하고 공감하는 과정이 기록 문헌을 찾고 실제 현장을 방문하고 역사의 사건 속으로 들어가 자신의 감정을 이입시키는 역사화를 그리는 과정과 유사하다는 점이다. 뉴욕의 지하철, 베를린의 거리, 베이징의 버스 안에서 만난 현실 속 도시인의 삶, 타인에 대한 궁금증, 거대한 도시의 흐름 속에서 방황하는 사람들의 현실과 현장이 작가의 화면속에서 사실적인 재현의 옷을 입으며 장면과 기록으로 존재하지만 결국 작가의 주관적인 인식의 결과물로, 하나의 해석과 상징으로 자리한다.
얼굴이 보이지 않을 만큼 앞으로 숙인 몸 <Ⓝ, 2024, 2025>, 무표정한 얼굴로 휴대폰을 보는 인물 Ⓝ5, 2023–2025>, 건조한 대화가 오가는 듯한 사람들 <지하철 대화, 2024, 2025> 등 거칠고 단순한 선으로 그려지는 서용선의 인물은 작가의 전형적인 인물상을 보여준다. 크게 뜬 눈, 굳은 코와 솟아오른 광대, 붉은 색으로 채워지는 얼굴은 인종과 성별, 배경이 다른 개별로서의 특징이나 상황의 설명에서 떠나 하나의 상징으로 보여지는 듯하다. 마치 우리 전통 탈(마스크)을 떠올리게 하는 작가의 특징적인 얼굴은 작가 자신을 그린 자화상과 비교할 때 더 명확해지는데, 정면을 응시하는 무표정한 얼굴과 몇 개의 굵은 선으로 드러나는 감정 그리고 강렬한 색으로 채워지고 그려지는 상황 속에서 개별 인물이 누구인가는 중요한 것이 아니라 삶의 역사이자 삶의 풍경인 얼굴, 우리 시대의 얼굴이고 집단의 표상이자 상징으로서의 얼굴로 대변된다.
이번 피비갤러리 전시에서는 최근 작가가 뉴욕을 오가며 그린 뉴욕의 지하철과 거리 그리고 그 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 모습과 작가의 자화상으로 구성하였다. 여러 작품에 등장하는 도시 속 인물들의 모습은 오늘을 사는 사람에 대한 관심과 탐구 그리고 그 사람들이 만들어가는 도시에 대한 작가의 경험과 이해의 시선을 보여준다. 우리 모두의 얼굴이자 시대의 초상 그리고 역사의 기록으로서 하나의 인간상으로 집약되는 서용선의 회화, ‘도시와 사람’을 통해 오랜 시간 이어온 작가의 사람에 대한 관심과 탐구를 현재의 시선으로 다시 보게 되기를 기대한다.
