Based on her experience of living in different Korea, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey, Yang Ah Ham (b. 1968) contemplates individuals and groups living in a world rooted in national and social systems, as well as the issue of increasing socialization of nature—in her video works. Starting with her early works produced in the late 1990s, Ham has explored changes in materials over time as well as the world of sensual and tactile images; her installation works juxtapose single-channel videos and architectural structures. In her recent works, Ham combines various media such as videos, sculptures, installations, and objects, and presents unique narratives of modern society based on human life. The shift in her interests from individual concerns to society has given rise to questions about political and social systems.

Since 2018, Ham has expanded Undefined Panorama into a research and visual art project. It constructs its own narrative structure through the process of collecting, categorizing, and abstracting data on individual cases across multiple fields such as finance, politics, technology, education and work. Keeping an eye on the global pandemic that broke out in 2020, Ham raises questions about various problems inherent in national and social systems, and shares her search for answers in diverse forms.

Ham has held solo exhibitions at Artpace, Texas; transmediale, Berlin; Pori Art Museum, Finland; Kumho Museum of Art and Art Sonje Center, Seoul, where she presents a solo exhibition, Yang Ah Ham: Undefined Panorama in 2026. She has participated in major exhibitions and biennales at institutions including Palais de Tokyo, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Marseille, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, de Appel, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and Seoul Museum of Art, as well as the Asia Triennial Manchester, Shanghai Biennale, Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Busan Biennale, and Gwangju Biennale. She was a finalist for the Korea Artist Prize in 2013 and the Hermès Art Prize in 2008, and received the Arts Award of the Year and the 3rd Daum Prize. Her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Seoul Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art Busan; Suwon Museum of Art; Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art; ARKO Art Center; and 21C Museum, New York.

함양아(b.1968)는 한국, 미국, 독일, 네덜란드, 튀르키예 등 세계 각지에서 거주한 경험을 토대로 국가 그리고 사회 시스템에 기반하여 살아가고 있는 개인과 집단, 사회화되어 가는 자연에 대한 문제를 영상 작업으로 풀어내고 있다. 작업 초기인 1990년대 후반부터 싱글채널 영상과 건축적인 구조물이 병치되는 설치작업을 전개하면서 시간의 흐름에 따른 물질의 변화나 감각적이고 촉각적인 이미지의 세계에 관한 내용을 다루었다. 최근 작업에서는 영상, 조각, 설치, 오브제 등 다양한 매체를 혼합하면서 인간의 삶을 바탕으로 한 현대사회의 단면을 독특한 시선의 내러티브로 드러내고 있다. 이 과정에서 작가의 관심은 점차 개인의 차원에서 사회에 닿았고 정치, 사회적 시스템에 대한 질문으로 이어졌다.

2018년 이후 함양아는 <정의되지 않은 파노라마> 프로젝트를 리서치와 시각예술작업을 통해 지속적으로 확장해 오고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 금융, 정치, 기술, 교육, 노동 등 다양한 영역에서 개별 사례에 대한 데이터를 수집하고 분류, 추상화하는 과정을 통해 현대사회의 구조와 그 안에서 살아가는 개인과 공동체의 서사를 구축한다. 최근에는 경제적 불평등과 환경 위기, 인간과 비인간의 관계까지 시선을 확장하며, 서로 긴밀하게 연결된 세계 안에서 공존할 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 탐색하고 있다.

함양아는 2000년 아트페이스(텍사스)에서의 첫 개인전을 시작으로 트랜스미디알레(베를린), 포리미술관(핀란드), 금호미술관(서울), 아트선재센터(서울) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 2026년 아트선재센터에서 개인전 《정의되지 않은 파노라마》를 선보인다. 또한 팔레 드 도쿄(파리), 아시아 트리엔날레 맨체스터(맨체스터), 마르세유 현대미술관(마르세유), 타이베이시립미술관(타이베이), 상하이비엔날레(상하이), 드 아펠(암스테르담), 국립현대미술관(서울), 서울시립미술관(서울), 북서울시립미술관(서울), 서울미디어시티비엔날레(서울), 부산비엔날레(부산), 광주비엔날레(광주) 등 국내외 주요 기관과 비엔날레의 단체전에 참여하였다. 2013년 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상 최종 후보와 2008년 에르메스 미술상 후보에 선정되었으며, 한국예술위원회의 올해의 예술상과 박건희문화재단의 제3회 다음작가상을 수상하였다. 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 부산현대미술관, 수원시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 아르코미술관, 21C Museum(New York) 등에 소장되어 있다.
